TIL wheelchair athletes with spinal injuries will sometimes intentionally injure themselves on the lower body (e.g. break a toe), causing their bodies to respond by raising blood pressure and enhancing their performance. This practice has been banned as cheating.
“Electric shocks to the testicles.”
Nope. Nope.
Nope.
It’s called autonomic dysreflexia. They basically trick their bodies into fight/flight mode. It can effective but also super dangerous
fuck yeah anything for a W
It’s also incredibly dangerous. It’s called autonomic dysreflexia and happens because when you have an injury below the level of your spinal cord injury, your body can’t react to it completely. The area above the injury essentially overcompensates and the rises in blood pressure and body temperature can be very high and very fast. People have died from this problem.
Even very small injuries can trigger it.
Holy shit, I learned a lot today. That’s fucking interesting. Never knew that the blood pressure regulation was such an issue…
Thats fucking metal
I can tell you first hand that once you survive your injuries and then gain the freedom of that wheelchair you literally attack life with reckless fucking abandon. There’s no slowing down or turning back. You survive and drive and thrive.
Having seen *Murderball*, I’m not surprised.
When “break a leg” is taken too literally.
Weird flex but ok
That’s the most metal thing I may have ever heard.
The balls it would take to shock your own balls if you could actually feel your balls though.
My blood pressure is very high and I’ve seen no positive athletic results
Man, you do not want to fuck around with your bladder. A peepee doc told me the #1 piece of advice for long-term bladder health is to go to to the bathroom as soon as you can feel you need to. You don’t want a flaccid bladder in your old age.
This is metal as fuck.
Mama didn’t raise no bitch
I take adderall and play video games. Same same
Let me tell you something else. I’ve seen a lot of spinals, Dude, and this guy is a fake. A fucking goldbricker. This guy fucking walks. I’ve never been more certain of anything in my life!
If ya ain’t cheatin, ya ain’t tryin!
the medical risks sound analogues to side effects as a reason for banning steroids.
This seems like a novel case of malingering (faking/exaggerating injury *or self-injuring*) to get a benefit
What are the phisiological advantages or disadvantages of trauma driven increased blood pressure? Is getting minorly injured advantageous in a sport like MMA for example? A sport where minor injuries happen frequently during matches?
That’s hardcore
There are better ways of raising your blood pressure
Ho lee, I didn’t realize wheelchair ballers were hard asf
Maybe not having that mindset would have helped them not be in their current situation?
As a tetraplegic, inducing autonomic dysreflexia is stupid. Of course being athletes, their cardiovascular system may very well can handle it but still… Look at the list of the possible side effects!
How do they know they have broken a toe?
Olympic women use to get pregnant and abort it to get a hormone boost. It was also banned and is tested for.
If you ain’t cheating, you ain’t trying. What studs.
And Cartman thought he can compete in the special olympics
I remember once seeing an ad for a new documentary about a sport called Murderball.
I was like “MURDERBALL?! that sounds badass!!”.
Than I found out it was about dudes in wheelchairs playing some wheelchair dude game….and I lol’d.
Let em have it
sick.
Wat.
Immediately thought of the caning scene in Freddy Got Fingered
Damnnnnnnnnn as if they weren’t losers enough already fam.
