TIL there is no scientific basis to the claim that you should drink 8 glasses of water a day
> You also don’t need to worry so much about never feeling thirsty. The human body is finely tuned to signal you to drink long before you are actually dehydrated.
I drink when I’m thirsty.
> Many people believe that the source of this myth was a 1945 Food and Nutrition Board recommendation that said people need about 2.5 liters of water a day. But they ignored the sentence that followed closely behind. It read, “Most of this quantity is contained in prepared foods.”
I live in the desert, where you perspire and don’t even notice because it instantly evaporates. I drink water all day.
I go with the Jordan Schlansky approach and drink 156 oz of water a day.
I’m this close to becoming a weeping willow
Just another lie foisted on the people by Big Water.
Israeli researchers tested this out. Under exertion and high heat the body requirements are way higher. From personal experience working on a construction project in Henderson Nevada when the heat was around 120 in the day, our requirements were higher than a gallon a day. We literally were dehydrated by the end of the day and it took time to drink enough to quench our thirst after the day cooled off. Our shirts were just crusty with salt.
In the porta potty there was a pee color chart taped to the wall. We were taught to compare our pee to the chart with an arrow pointing to the safe range and darker colors indicated we were needing more water. Keeping our pee in the safe range was difficult.
My whole life is a lie.
I recall it was in the 1990s that ‘drink water’ / ‘drink LOTS OF water’ became the thing. Before that people thought you were odd if you drank plain water “Why are you drinking water? We have juice, Coke, Fanta…”
And people would insist you HAD to drink water. Tea, coffee, soft drinks, juice didn’t rehydrate you. It HAD to be plain water.
Now, wait a second, you doctors have been telling us to drink eight glasses of gravy a day.
Had a kidney stone (2 hours of the worst pain imaginable) and ended up seeing a urologist. He said over 95% of kidney stones could be eliminated if people stayed better hydrated. He said the truth is that the quantity of water in wasn’t as important as the quantity going out.
He said people should aim for 2 litres of urine a day (8 glasses worth). Whether you got that from soup, celery, tea, coffee, juice or whatever he didn’t care. Obviously more water is better but our systems can process liquids from a variety of different sources.
In truth, it’s not much different than the color comment above. If it’s hot our bodies need more liquid to function correctly. If it’s cold we need less. Regardless, look at output more than input if in doubt.
Lesson learned. Stay hydrated or it will eventually hurt you.
I’ve never heard this myth (or if I have it has completely slipped my mind). I feel like 8, 8 oz glasses of water would leave you feeling thirsty all day. I usually try to drink twice that much.
Conspiracy by Big Water.
I am in nursing school and this whole craze about being hydrated is crazy. 8 glasses per day might be way too much. They key thing is drink when you are thirsty!
I don’t even drink water and I’m fine
But isn’t there a scientific claim that water helps you lose weight?
Who would’ve thought a “medical” recommendation that eschewed any actual measurement was helpful!
8 glasses probably is a good average to aim for though, right?
There is no scientific basis to say you shouldn’t drink 8 glasses of water per day.
