TIL about crown shyness- A phenomenon where trees grow in a manner that keeps their branches from touching one another, forming beautiful patterns
Seems trees have more respect for personal space than many people
>According to one theory, each tree forces its neighbors into a pattern that maximizes resource collection and minimizes harmful competition.
It’s too bad people can’t do this.
Great album.
How are the branches aware where they are in relation to the other branches? Photo receptors?
Could it be to avoid spreading harmful things like disease or fungi or whatever? I know that if two branches on a tree rub together it creates an open wound on that spot, and can allow nasties into the tree’s system.
not oaks though – they are straight up keeping the maples from getting anymore sunlight.
It doesn’t sound like that big of a mystery- if a tree starts growing and anything- a cliff, tower, or another tree’s leaf is in the way, the frontmost leaf in that direction will die from lack of sunlight. Queue evolution and trees will develop to stop growing in the direction of the impediment/shade.
There’s a tree on the edge of my house and the half against the house grows zero leaves, same concept.
They’re not avoiding each other. The branches break off when they hit each other during strong winds. It’s a natural phenomenon that has nothing to do with “shyness”.
