Facing existential crises in the spread of hate speech misinformation that is targeted and violent content on Facebook, the company’s executives have lately been calling for new and wide-ranging rules to govern networking firms. “I believe we need new regulation,” Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg wrote in an op-ed published March 30 in The Washington Post. “Folks shouldn’t need to rely on individual companies addressing these problems by themselves. ”
“This is an unprecedented assault on freedom of speech that will see internet giants monitoring the communications of billions and censoring lawful speech,” said Silkie Carlo, the director of civil liberties non-profit Big Brother Watch, in a statement to TIME. The Brexit procedure, which is taking up almost all time at the U.K. Parliament, may also complicates the approval and rolling from these new rules — either by preventing them being resolved on, or by ushering in a new government more hostile to the principles until they can be put into place.
A regime falls based on what Zuckerberg, at least, has promised to want.

Facebook, Twitter and YouTube employ tens of thousands of content moderators, whose job is in part to enforce those codes of behavior by eliminating statements, videos and graphics that don’t honor — frequently at great psychological price to the workers, who are frequently exposed to disturbing material. Under the proposed new guidelines, social media companies would still have to employ enough people to take down content that is significant, but those moderators would stick to a set of principles set by a state regulator, instead of their employer — potentially allowing social networking companies to skirt accusations of violating freedoms of language .

That is beginning to change. The Facebook CEO’s op-ed was interpreted as a bid to get ahead of a regulatory procedure that some consider inevitable along with Facebook’s such as interference at the 2016 presidential election, other recent high-profile calamities. However, what others and Zuckerberg did not anticipate is the rate at which lawmakers around the globe are turning against social networking companies. Australian officials have already transferred to hold executives like Zuckerberg responsible for violent content on their websites; a few in New Zealand want to follow their lead. However, enforcing that duty of care may prove expensive.
But some activists are criticizing the plans, saying they smack.
The feeling that such firms are failing to get a grasp has led they have to be controlled. “The networking firms need a responsibility to behave against groups and accounts that are always and maliciously sharing understood sources of disinformation. ”
