Facing existential crises in the spread of hate speech misinformation that is targeted and violent content on Facebook, the company’s executives have lately been calling for new and wide-ranging rules to govern networking firms. “I believe we need new regulation,” Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg wrote in an op-ed published March 30 in The Washington Post. “Folks shouldn’t need to rely on individual companies addressing these problems by themselves. ”

“This is an unprecedented assault on freedom of speech that will see internet giants monitoring the communications of billions and censoring lawful speech,” said Silkie Carlo, the director of civil liberties non-profit Big Brother Watch, in a statement to TIME. The Brexit procedure, which is taking up almost all time at the U.K. Parliament, may also complicates the approval and rolling from these new rules — either by preventing them being resolved on, or by ushering in a new government more hostile to the principles until they can be put into place.

A regime falls based on what Zuckerberg, at least, has promised to want.

However, what others and Zuckerberg did not anticipate is the rate at which lawmakers around the globe are turning against social networking companies. But some activists are criticizing the plans, saying they smack.
