The reaction to the Christchurch attack, at least in the united states, has been a mixture of terror and shock but not much surprise. We’ve been watching this trend build for years: politicians’ disingenuous rhetoric, taken by zealots and the mentally ill. The explanations that wing lawmakers and commentators use when challenged on their own words: I was only kidding! Free speech! The Christchurch attack is as horrifying as it was unavoidable – the minute when online griefing mutated into real world genocide.
That is what happens to the planet when assholes are in charge; when assholes allow their own bigotry to be broadcast by other assholes with impunity, and no one wants to stop them lest more assholes get more mad.
