New submitter nichogenius writes: The monitoring run of LIGO and VIRGO just started but has observed a second black hole merger. The LIGO detectors have been offline since the 25th of August, 2017 for a set of updates. The hottest observational run is the first run where gravitational wave events are being publicly announced as they happen instead of being declared weeks or months afterwards. Few details of this merger are available at this time, however there is some information on the twitter of LIGO and raw information can be obtained from LIGO’s event database page.

Detection events are being openly broadcast with NASA’s VOEvent system. You are able to set up your own VOEvent client working with the pygcn module with example code available in this tutorial, if you understand a little bit of python.
