Disney CEO Bob Iger criticized social media platforms for permitting hatred to disperse, saying they permit the supply of the propagation of”ideology”
“We only have one message for those who seek to push hatred, branch, or violence: ” You don’t have any place on our platforms,” Cook explained.
Iger is not the CEO to acknowledge that more could be done to avoid hatred from dispersing online. Apple CEO Tim Cook called out white supremacists while he was accepting his”Courage Against Hate” award in the Anti-Defamation League in December. Cook told white supremacists and”dangerous conspiracy theorists” that they don’t have a home on Apple’s services. His comments came not too long after Apple removed Alex Jones’ Infowars from the App Store. Iger sits on Apple’s board. Neither Apple nor Disney owns media platforms that are social.
Iger also utilized his time to ask people in the area to”once again renounce and reject hatred in all forms.”
Iger referred to societal websites as something Hitler”could have loved,” according to Variety, while taking a humanitarian award earlier now from the Simon Wiesenthal Center, an individual rights nonprofit that’s named after a Holocaust survivor. He also added that social networking is the”most powerful advertising tool an extremist could ever expect.” Social networking is intended to amplify”our deepest anxieties,” according to Iger, while also”constantly validating our convictions.”
His comments come at a time when Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Google, and Instagram are being accosted for allowing hateful ideologies to spread round the world and not doing enough to prevent harmful conspiracy theorists from gaming their algorithms. All of the aforementioned companies have admitted they can do and also have introduced a series of policy changes and stage changes to try to fight the misuses of their merchandise.
“It produces a false sense that everyone shares the same view,” Iger said. “Social media enables evil to prey on troubled minds and lost souls and most of us understand that social news feeds may comprise more fiction than fact, dispersing vile ideology that has no place in a civil society which values human life”
